Assessment

Our Board Certified Behavior Analysts are trained in a variety of ABA-related assessment tools.

Unlike some organizations, we are not tied to one specific assessment tool. Instead, assessment tools are chosen based on what is most appropriate for each individual client. Some tools we commonly use are the ATEC, AFLS, VB-MAPP, and Skills® Assessment.

During the initial assessment, our BCBAs often use a combination of assessment tools in order to accurately and comprehensively assess an individual’s development. The BCBA will also review the individual’s previous reports or evaluations, interview relevant family members, and observe the individual in his/her natural environment. The primary skill areas targeted during this assessment are: speech and language, adaptive, fine and gross motor, executive function, social, and cognition skills.

In addition to identifying deficits in these skills, the BCBA is also noting any barriers to learning that may be present. Identifying these barriers is important because when we understand why and how learning has been impeded in the past, we are then able to develop more precise instructional practices to enhance learning. Based on the assessment, the BCBA will make recommendations regarding treatment intensity, write specific goals for the individual to work on, and design individualized teaching programs to help him/her make progress on those goals.
An initial assessment is required to begin any ABA services. Once those services begin, re-assessments are accomplished every six months to formally assess progress and review the course of treatment. Assessment results are documented in a formal report that is provided to the parents/caregivers, the child’s Primary Care Physician, and any other relevant medical provider that a parent/caregiver has identified as following the child’s case (e.g., neurologist, developmental pediatricIan, etc.).
